Thank you for bringing this collective work together
I would like to thank Celeste, Jeannine, Ammina and Jyotika for their dedication, persistence and the care they have brought to this book. Thank you for reading so closely, guiding each stage, supporting us through the revisions, and coordinating the work needed to bring such different perspectives into conversation. Much of the effort behind a volume like this remains unseen; it deserves recognition too.
OUR CONTRIBUTION · CHAPTER 16
Beyond Borders
The Imperative of Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research in Media and Journalism
Javier J. Amores · Martín Oller Alonso · Patricia Sánchez-Holgado · Maximiliano Frías Vázquez · Carlos Arcila Calderón
Part III of the volume: Expanding the Boundaries of Methodologies and Approaches.
Our chapter examines what enables — and what hinders — journalism research across disciplines, institutions and countries. International collaboration does not, in itself, remove inequalities: who asks the questions, who controls the resources, who interprets the data and who receives recognition also matters.
To Javier, Patricia, Maximiliano and Carlos, thank you for the shared work, the conversations and the revisions. It has been a pleasure to develop this contribution together and to discuss how collaboration can become more critical, inclusive and attentive to context.
THE CHAPTER IN FOUR IDEAS
Crossing borders also means asking who gets to decide.
01
Connect the global and the local
Glocalisation and digital transformation call for research into international connections without erasing local languages, histories and conditions.
02
Compare without homogenising
Combine comparable indicators with situated interpretations: etic and emic approaches, methodological pluralism and dialogue across disciplines.
03
Collaborate without extracting
Move beyond collecting data in some places and producing theory in others. Redistribute leadership, funding and the capacity to shape research agendas.
04
Agree on fair rules
Clear agreements on authorship and data ownership, shared infrastructure, privacy and attention to AI bias. Ethics belongs in the research design.
From projects to proposals. A critical review of initiatives such as the Worlds of Journalism Study, Journalistic Role Performance and the Global Media Monitoring Project allows us to discuss both their contributions and the asymmetries that continue to shape comparative research.

Those of us who have contributed to the volume are invited to join the event. I will be attending as a chapter coauthor, and I look forward to hearing from the editors and sharing in this conversation.
